Alot of times we hear people say "my dog has bad breath"! Did you know that bad breath is the cause of dental disease.
Dental disaese is the second most common disease in dogs and cats. Nearly 80-85% of pets have periodontal disease by age 3. Dental disease can not only be painful but teh bacteria that enters the bloodstream from the mouth can cause damage to vital organs such as the heart, brain, liver and kidneys. Just simply looking into the mouth you can only assess 20-30% of the dental health, therefore a dental cleaning with dental xrays are important.
Here at Lincolnway Veterinary Clinic we recommend a dental cleaning at least every 2-3 years some breeds may need one more frequently. Dental cleanings involve an oral exam, scaling, polishing, and full mouth of digital dental xrays. After the cleaning it is important to prevent plaque formation my either brushing your pets teeth, using a mouth wash or dental treats. Ask our staff about our wonderful CET dental care products which is available for dogs with food allergies.
